TAE KWON DO
FIVE TENETS

There are five (5) TENETS in Tae Kwon Do. Together, they make up the "credo" of Tae Kwon Do.  These Tenets are the principles or rules by which all those who study Tae Kwon Do  are expected to behave while in class, and by which they are encouraged to live. The Tenets go to the very roots of the philosophy and represent the spirit of this martial art.

The five Tenets are:

  1. COURTESY (Ye-Ui) To be thoughtful and considerate of others. To be polite and show respect. To be helpful and share knowledge.

  2. INTEGRITY (Yom-Chi) To be honest with others and one's self at all times.  To live by a code of moral values and principles. To admit to mistakes and make amends.

  3. PERSEVERANCE (In-Nae) To never give up in the pursuit of one's goals.  To have the strong will to persist regardless of obstacles, and to have the patience to work hard and overcome them.  To exhibit loyalty.

  4. SELF-CONTROL (Guk-Gi) To have control of one's body and mind.  To be consistent in one's actions and reactions.  To demonstrate restraint over one's impulses, emotions, or desires.  To take responsibility for one's own actions.

  5. INDOMITABLE SPIRIT (Baekjul-Bool Gool) To have courage in the face of adversity. To resist being dominated by, or having one's spirit broken by another.  To show unshakeable belief in one's principles. To defend the rights of others.
